Where is Bill’s Hot Dog Stand?

Somewhere in Ypsilanti, Michigan is a place called Bill’s Hot Dog Stand, a place where — and I quote an anonymous wiki contributor — “two hot dogs and a root beer” make a great lunch under five dollars.

Where is Bill’s? Arborwiki needs to know. Can you help me find it?

update 2007-06-10: Bill’s has been located and dissed; see the wiki page or this post’s comments for details. Thanks to Dan for the info.

  1. Bill’s Hotdogs is on US12 (Michigan Ave.) about 2 miles east of downtown Ypsilanti. They are “ok”. They have been much better in past years. They don’t even use fresh onions.. dehydrated ones.

  2. Thanks much. I’ll add your information to the wiki — although the place sounds like a definite pass.

  3. I grew up in Ypsilanti. I love Bills hot dogs and Root Beer! 40+ years.

  4. I also grew up in Ypsilanti and love Bill’s hot dogs! My mom visits her dad every summer and always brings my brother and me some Bill’s hot dogs. My dad use to take me to Bill’s when we were out and about… great memories. They still taste great to me!

  5. I still say they are just “ok”. Kluck’s is much better. By the way, I am 53 years old and born and raised in Ypsilanti and still live there. Anyone remember the Lone Star just a couple of doors down from Bill’s Hot Dogs?

  6. Bill’s is a classic for the those that love a great dog and root beer. Kluck’s is equally as good. Also visit the Chick-Inn Drive In on the corner of Prospect and Holmes road if you want a great burger or hoagie!

  7. Yep we ate at Chick-Inn just the other day. Been eating there all my life. Their hoagies are just awesome and then there is the Paul Bunyan. I think these days they have better hoagies than Gabriel’s. Gabriel’s has gotten kind of chincy with their products. I would rather they raise prices instead of screwing up a good sandwich. Anyone remember Dog & Suds? Frostop?

  8. Ate at bills and it was as I remember from the 50’s & 60’s. Maybe it was the nostalgia of going to Gabriel’s Both were good but maybe not as good as the old days. Gabriel’s got rid of the jukebox. Several years ago I was home and ate at Klucks but wasn’t as I remembered, glad to hear they are still good, I’ll try them again next time. Can never eat to many hot dogs. I do remember Dog and Suds and Frostop do you remember Barhops and races behind the Green Lantern?

  9. Definitely remember Dog ‘n’ Suds on Packard Road in Ann Arbor. I remember ordering a hot dog and having it served on a hamburger bun.

  10. We think Bill’s Hot Dogs are the finest you can get. In all fairness, haven’t tried Kluck’s…will have to do so next time I’m in town. But a visit to Bill’s is a highlight of every visit to my hometown of Ann Arbor, MI.

  11. You can’t leave town, for any length of time and stop at Bill’s. That would be like going to the fair and staying in the car. It’s HOME!!

  12. I also grew up in ypsi, and Bill’s hot dog is the best. I got 20 every day on my way home for myself and family Therrrrrrrrrrrrrr great.

  13. Bill’s is the best chili dog I have ever had Kluck’s has great hamburgers and hoagies but when it comes to chili dogs they are not even close.

  14. remember when bills was a dirt lot and the car hops were the high school foot ball team still drive all the way from rockwood to have 1 go there before going over to check on parents that still live in the old neiborhood remember when klucks was Alberts A&W and ya sat in the open on the sidewalk gabriels is still good but it died with the oldman he used to close cause he couldnt get the cut of meat he wantd remember when clucks was out of a school bus lot of old memories about saturday nites in the back seat of an old chevy Thnks for the smile

  15. As I recall Bill’s always used dehydrated onions! I havent been there in probably 30 years but I used to go there all the time with my mom and we’d get a load of hot dogs and a quart of their “home made root beer.” I dunno if it was home made or just fountain, but it didnt seem right having those fantastic chili dogs without that cone shaped cardboard “barrel” of root beer on the table. I still remember them as having the best coneys EVER.

Nice to know it’s still there. I’ll definitely be stopping by if I get back to Ypsi.

  16. I am 56 years old and still one of my favorite food memories is of Bill’s. If you never thought you liked root beer Bill’s would convert you. My grandparents lived a couple of blocks away from Bill’s and I almost can still taste the the meat in a bun that was I think their version of a hamburger. My uncle would buy us a bag of ‘em with a couple of coned-quarts of that root beer elixir. What a meal! Could someone maybe clear up my memory of that hamburger? Was it just the coney sauce without the hot dog? I now live in Tennessee and would give my right arm to have their recipes for that sandwich and root beer!

  17. I was born in Ypsilanti, and lived there until I was 10. I remember my dad/mom taking my sister and I there. It was the best tasting hotdog’s and rootbeer that I can remember ever having. I now live in Tennessee and am planning on being up there in mid Sept. I hope they’re still open this time of year!!
